ICT standardisation – China and the European Research Area
Exploring the implications of ICT standard-setting in China –
global convergence or ‘standards wars’?
ICT
2008 Lyon. Networking Session, 26/11/2008 (14:00-15:30)
China has become remarkably active in setting ICT standards. This
raises issues for the country in terms of standardisation processes
and policies which, in turn, will have major consequences for the
European economy and the global ICT market. This session organised
by the China - European Union Standards project at ICT 2008 analysed
the emerging ICT standardisation activities in China, and its links
to China's goal of promoting local technology. In particular, it
discussed whether the outcomes of these activities are likely to
be open standards and alignment between regional economies, or ‘standards
wars’ and/or fragmented global markets. The possible consequences
for global innovation and markets, especially in Europe, were also
addressed.
